Kinetica Online is pleased to provide direct links to commentaries from our senior editor Dr. Steven Pelech has posted on other blogs sites. Most of these comments appear on the GenomeWeb Daily Scan website, which in turn highlight interesting blogs that have been posted at numerous sites in the blogosphere since the beginning of 2010. A wide variety of topical subjects are covered ranging from the latest scientific breakthroughs, research trends, politics and career advice. The original blogs and Dr. Pelech’s comments are summarized here under the title of the original blog. Should viewers wish to add to these discussions, they should add their comments at the original blog sites.

The primary reasons why executives with a stake in the commercialization of the human genome are willing to have their genome sequences revealed to the broad research community are because it may promote their business, they really have nothing to loose, and there is a slight possibility to personally benefit with researchers focused on their individual genomes. However, the reality is that without a real understanding of what the differences in probably over 50 million single nucleotide polymorphisms and other types of mutations in the human genome actually mean, the individual genome sequence data is pretty useless. Now if these executives and some prominent scientists are willing to disclose their full medical, life and family histories coupled with a willingness to subject themselves to a wide barrage of medical tests and publicly disclose the results, this might actually be useful in helping to make some sense of our genetic differences. Sadly though, I don't think that this is going to happen any time soon.
